I’ve set myself the challenge of watching every NZ On Air-funded music video.
I’m looking at the golden age of music video funding, where over 2400 videos received the $5000 grant that was issued from April 1991 to June 2011.
So that’s a lot to get through, including some of my faves and a few that I’m not necessarily looking forward to seeing again.
Because I want to share these videos with you, dear reader, I’m going to restrict my viewings to what I can find online. Though if an artist doesn’t have their videos on the web, that in itself is pretty interesting.
I’m going through the videos by the funding rounds they were in, not the release date of the video. Most videos are released just a few months after their funding round, but some can be delayed by several months or even years or released in a different order.
I’ll review one video per weekday, with bonus posts to mourn the missing videos, and I reserve the right to change that or take a break if I start to get all videoed out.
And if you have any stories, factoids or general comments, feel free to leave a comment on the relevant page.
Chur.

Ooh looking forward to this! Don’t suppose you have a mailing list in case I forget to check back?
Well, I don’t currently have a mailing list (maybe a weekly digest?), but I’ll see what I can do. I’m probably going to have a Twitter account with notifications, if that would help.
Weekly digest sounds great. Twitter will help too.
Looking forward to this unfolding, really liked your Madonna video project. Good luck with finding everything, it’s surprising what is (and isn’t) out there.
Thank you! The search and discovery of what’s online and not is all part of the fun.
Ambitious project! Looking forward to it unfold. I missed a whole lot of NZ music in the 90s – so you’ll be a valuable source of catching up knowledge for me. Thanks Robyn !
Just wait till you see what you’ve missed out on…
Hi Robyn,
Well done. You could set-up a mailchimp acct and make a fortnightly or monthly auto RSS feed that would make it really easy for people to follow and apart from setup chimp is now free up to 2000 subscribers.
Thanks for this suggestion. It sounds right about what I’m after!
